THOT-supported Senate Bill 25 advanced through the Texas Legislature before the end of the legislative session and is now with Governor Abbott.

SB 25 authorizes grants for hospitals and other clinical sites to support innovations in nursing education and training. A rider in the final budget includes $6 million in general revenue for fiscal year 2024 for these two-year grants. Funds will be coordinated through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

THOT thanks the Legislature for its efforts to advance this critical legislation and funding to support Texas’ nurse workforce and looks forward to continuing work with lawmakers to augment funding and create additional opportunities to support nurse education and training programs in Texas.

Abbott has until June 8 to sign or veto the bill. If not signed by that date, it becomes law, effective Sept. 1, 2023.
