Texas’ public and teaching hospitals have a unique role in providing care and sustaining Texas’ health care system.
From supporting hospitals across Texas to training the next generation of providers and other essential health care workers, Texas’ public hospital districts do more than you might think.
Texas public and teaching hospitals:
- Provide more than one-third of care for uninsured Texans. Five public hospital districts take on 38 percent of total hospital uncompensated care costs ($2.9 billion).
- Support care for uninsured and publicly insured Texans across the state. By providing the non-federal share of Medicaid DSH payments, five large public hospital districts make it possible for Texans across the state to access quality, timely care.
- Provide the most advanced trauma care. About half of the state’s designated Level 1 trauma facilities are public and teaching hospitals.
- Train most of the state’s future physicians, nurses, and other essential health care workers.
- Invest in neighborhood sites of care so that timely and convenient outpatient care is available when it’s needed.
- Often serve as the local funding partner for the Local Mental Health Authority.
- Provide care in correctional facilities.
