As a valued member of Teaching Hospitals of Texas (THOT), JPS Health Network continues to excel in providing innovation in healthcare. JPS is the first hospital in Texas to implement the nationally-recognized, TeamBirth initiative. This groundbreaking program improves the birth experience and patient outcomes by fostering a culture of communication, collaboration, and patient empowerment.
The TeamBirth initiative, a collaboration between JPS Health Network and the United Way of Tarrant County, reflects a shared commitment to improving maternal health outcomes. TeamBirth is designed to ensure that mothers are active participants in their care, creating a safer, more personalized, and empowering birthing experience.
“THOT members tirelessly pursue innovative healthcare solutions that improve the lives of all Texans,” said Maureen Milligan, PhD, THOT president and CEO. “The implementation of the TeamBirth initiative at JPS Health Network exemplifies the power of collaboration, transparency, and patient-centered care in improving the maternal care experience and outcomes and highlights our members constant work to innovate and improve outcomes.”
Based on a program trial at four U.S. hospitals:
- 97% of patients in the program felt they had the role they wanted in their childbirth experience.
- 93% of clinicians reported improved care through enhanced communication and teamwork.
- 90% of labor and delivery professionals recommended TeamBirth for other units.
A national program implemented at more than 100 U.S. hospitals and hospitals around the world, TeamBirth is designed by Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health systems innovation at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
The program implements shared huddles where patients and their care teams regularly review progress, adjust care plans, and schedule next steps. These huddles are supported by a Shared Planning Tool prominently displayed in the patient’s room, which highlights team roles, care plans, and patient preferences — ensuring that every voice is heard and valued.
While the current focus is on labor and delivery, TeamBirth is also exploring tools to enhance prenatal care and NICU stays. By expanding the program’s reach, JPS Health Network is paving the way for improved communication and collaboration across the entire continuum of maternal and infant care.
