As one of only two Level I trauma centers serving the greater Houston region, Harris Health System’s Ben Taub Hospital is increasing its care capacity to meet the needs of a growing population.
The hospital recently completed a four-year expansion project, adding treatment rooms, new equipment, and major renovations to the emergency department. Ben Taub Hospital’s Level I trauma center sees more than 80,000 patients a year, and the added capacity and equipment will ensure the hospital can continue serving the community. Houston is the fourth largest city in the U.S. and has grown almost 8 percent since 2010, bringing the population to well over 2.2 million residents.
“What this major renovation at Ben Taub Hospital is allowing us to do . . . is taking care of our patients with the dignity, privacy, high-quality care and the safety they deserve when they come to us,” says Esmaeil Porsa, MD, president and CEO, Harris Health. “This is truly a labor of love for all of us.”
“Harris Health sets a great example for Texas through their prudent investments to expand emergency and trauma capacity to meet the needs of its growing population,” said Maureen Milligan, THOT president/CEO. “Great hospitals that invest in excellent patient care and the next generation of Texas caregivers are a vital part of a Texas’ health care future.”
The improvements will help Harris Health continue providing great care for the Houston area. Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, Harris Health’s second hospital in Houston, is a level III trauma center that sees more than 90,000 patients a year. This brings the system’s total number of hospital patients to approximately 170,000 every year.
